Ans. Hampi was famous as it contained the architectural ruins of a fortified city that was built during the time of the Vijayanagara empire.It had distinctive architecture with buildings having pillars, domes and arches. Moors, Chettis and agents of European traders often thronged its markets.

5. How did Masulipatnam loss both it's merchants and prosperity in the course of the 18th century ?

Ans. Masulipatnam lost both its merchants and prosperity and declined in the course of the 18th century as the Company traders moved to Bombay, Calcutta and Madras. Today it is nothing more than a dilapidated little town.

1. In what ways was craft production in cities like Calcutta different from that in cities like Thanjavur ?

Craft production in cities like Calcutta was formally organized and planned by the European companies. In Thanjavur, the crafts persons were independent. Crafts persons in Calcutta were not free to sell their own crafts and textiles whereas in Thanjavur, the crafts persons were free to sell their products.

2. What were the problems encountered by the merchants ?

Ans. The merchants had to pass through many kingdoms and forests. They had fear of being robbed while passing through forests. Hence they usually travelled in caravans and formed guilds to protect their interests.

3. Why East India Company and Dutch wanted to control Masulipatnam ?

Ans. British and Dutch wanted to establish control over the Masulipatnam due to its location. It was of strategic importance as it enabled trade with the eastern countries. They could also control imports and exports. It is the most important trading town.

4. Give an account of capital towns in mediaeval period specially at Thanjavur.

Ans. Thanjavur was the capital of the Cholas. It was an administrative town. This is situated on the banks of Kaveri. Rajarajeshvara temple (built by Rajaraja Chola) is in this town. Kunjaramallam Rajaraja was the architect of this temple. Apart from the temple, palaces with mandapas (pavilions) are present in this town. The kings held court in these mandapas. Barracks for the army were also present in the town.
