1. Describe education in pre- British Times.
Ans. Before the advent of the British in India, education was imparted in India in Pathsalas, madrasas and gurukuls. Higher education was confined to rich and elite classes of both Hindus and Muslims.
2. Why did William Jones want to study Indian History, philosophy and law ?
Ans. William Jones felt that studying Indian history, philosophy and law would not only help the British learn from Indian culture, but it would also help Indians rediscover their own heritage, and understand the lost glories of their past.
3. Why did James Mill and Thomas Macualry think about the need of Western education in India ?
Ans. James Mill and Thomas Macualry think that European education is essential for India because they were of the opinion that the knowledge of the East was unscientific, illogical and irrational. They contended that the western education was scientific and logical.
4. Why did Mahatma Gandhi think that western education made slaves out of Indians ?
Ans. Mahatma Gandhi think that colonial education had always enslaved Indians and created a sense of inferiority in the minds of Indians. It made them look Western civilisation as superior, and destroyed the pride they had in their own Indian culture.
5. Why did Rabindranath Tagore want to open a school in natural surroundings ?
Ans. Rabindranath Tagore considered the atmosphere of schools quite suffocating. The school appeared like a prison. He wanted a place where children could learn while enjoying their childhood.
