In this passage the author says that Sue's head was dangerously swollen . Her eyes were swollen .she also had a deep wound on her arms but when the author asked, why she had not paid attention to her injuries earlier, she replied that I did not want to worry you.

So, he was using a spare which had not been corrected for magnetic variation. he made an allowance for this and the author assessed the effect of westerly winds blowing in this part of the Indian Ocean

The author is thinking of Mary who has been sitting on the driving wheel during the crisis .He further thought of the seven-year-old girl who did not want to bother him by telling about the head injury and later had to undergo six minor operations to remove the clot of blood in her skull.
